Håvards question

Holden thinks that a lot of people are phony. Why do you think this is the case?

I think Holden calls people phoney because he is always analyzing people. He sees people, and their opinions, for what they really are and mean. He sees through peoples lies, made-up stories and deceits. He sees the deep level of hypocrisy in the real world. Even though he admits to being a "terrific liar" himself, he still calls people phoney. This is a striking example of irony, most likely done on purpose by the author.

Holden Caulfield is a very funny character. While reading the book we get a very clear impression of what kind of person Holden is through his thoughts. To me it seem like Holden has very strong opinions about the people around him. He use a lot of time analyzing the people around him, and in very many cases he conclude with the fact that the people he analyze are phony. Holden seem like a very intelligent teenager, and I get the impression that he generalizes all stupid people as phony. Personally I think that it’s kind of brutal to look upon all unintelligent people as phony, it’s not their fault that they’re dumb anyway.

Holden is a person who isolates himself from alot of people. He sometimes even claims himself depressive. His vocabulary is therefore limited, because he does not want to open himself to the world in the form of words.

The word phoney means not genuine, or not real, but i think he uses the word in a more general way. He meets people who doesnt act like themselves, but act a certain way to get accepted.

Holden shares encounters he has had with students and faculty of Pencey, whom he criticizes as being superficial, or as he puts it, "phony." This indicates that Holden is suffering with anger managment problems and a bad vocabulary. I mean, who uses the word phony if they arent physically moolested? No one, so Holden have to be in the early stage of becomming a madman. He is suffering from a phony syndrom. Or maybe he just likes the word? Who knows?
