Holden believes that he can avoid beeing flunked in History. But Mr Spencer has somekind of Egypt fetish, and because Holden dont have this same fun in learning about Egypt history (he actually does what he does best, dont do anything, Mr Spencer denies his attempt of taking advantage of the school system to gain better grades.
In the house of Mr Spencer, Holden finds something to complain about as always. The first he complains about is that Mr Spencers bed is like a rock (dont ask about more information in that sceanario). Holden also finds Mr Spencer to serious, ironicly Holdens was the one to come to Mr Spencer to talk about serious shit.
Holdens desire to lie about all pearsons, and very much to Mr Spencer because he is a pearson of autority. But Mr Spencer dosent take Holden on a lie, maybe because he is to busy thinking about Egypt...?

Their relationship is kind of close, but distant. The teacher seem upset, due to the results Holden has achieved in school. My view on Holden's attitude on this, is that he doesn't care at all when it comes to history.

Holden is very polite though, and Spencer and Spencer's wife is also very polite, they offer him different snacks and treats.

I find this part of the book very entertaining, beacause Holden really thinks Spencer is a fool.

To me the meeting between Holden and his teacher Spencer seemed a little bit weird. Holden has just dropped out of school when he’s meeting with old Spencer, and Spencer will as Holden’s teacher of course not let the chance of giving him a lecture pass. Spencer is an old man and a good teacher, but even though Holden is a smart guy, Spencer has no other choice but to fail him in history. Spencer wonder why this is the case, and during their meeting he ask Holden. Holden has simply no good answer to this question, and he therefore tries to avoid it. When Holden is sitting there, talking to Spencer, he doesn’t enjoy it very much. Spencer is lecturing him about his future, but Holden doesn’t seem to care at all. This is why I think that the meeting between Holden and old Spencer is a little bit weird. Spencer is trying to talk some sense into Holden, but he doesn’t care even though he knows that Spencer just is trying to do him a favor.

Holden visits his teacher to bid farewell to him, by request from aforementioned teacher, that Holden comes to see him before he leaves Pencey.

It might seem like Mr. Spencer knows about Holdens problems, or atleast, has certain knowledge of them. The two men seem to be quite close, perhaps closer than a normal teacher-pupil relationship.

Spencer is polite towards Holden, he and his wife offering Holden snacks and other treats. On the other hand, Holdens seems to regard Spencer as an old fool, and does not like being in his company.

Maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention when I was reading this section of the book, but what I got from it is apparently a little different than the others. I got the impression that Mr. Spencer was fed up with all of Holdens shenanigans, and even though he knew that Holden was brighter than he acted, he had no choice but to fail him. It seemed to me that Holden respected Mr. Spencer on a personal level, but as a teacher he didn't care for him much - and that's why their situation is so complicated. Holden likes Spencer, but at the same time he doesn't, which leads to their relationship, at times, being very hard to understand.

Holden is very interesting interpreting the fact that he seems like he doesn't care about anything or anything. Yet he is very polite and doesn't act careless. When he speak to Spencer he tells him he has done a perfectly correct decision flunking him from school, which is a lie. On the other hand, he doesn't care about being flunked, he just tells Spencer he made the right determination, because he sees that Spencer feels sorry for him, and that he think Holden blames him. Holden tells him Spencer has done the right thing and leaves.
